Music is a powerful force that unites people who on the surface may seem to have
little in common. Such is the case with Renita, Newman & Williams, an Austin
Texas band whose members, despite being from very different backgrounds, have
come together to forge a musical union that is downright mesmerizing. Consisting of
Bruce Newman on guitar and vocals, Kirk Williams on bass, guitar and vocals, and
Renita Withrow on flute, the trio is a delicious concoction of Blues, Rock, Folk,
Political Satire and Jazz genres.
Bruce Newman earned his degree from Michigan State University in music
composition and accounting. The last 15 years he has owned and operated
Barnstormers recording studio and music store. In addition to writing over 2000
songs, Bruce has worked some form of music every day for the last 15 years, be it
engineering and producing over 300 projects, disk jockeying (including every one of
Jenna Bush’s high school parties) or performing over 5000 events with his live
guitar as the Karaoke King.
Currently Williams and Newman are fronting a popular, live kid’s dance band,
Jungle Jill & The Jaybirds and also releasing a political, topical CD, Poly Sigh, a
collection of power-pop, hop-country, and political songs through this campaign
season.
Renita Withrow’s versatility on the flute is the voice she brings to any musical
gathering. For 22 years, she has been playing locally with everybody from backporch
pickers to some of Austin's finest singer/songwriters. While blues is her
favorite medium, she can blend seamlessly into folk, rock, jazz, reggae, even rap.
Presently she’s engaged in a recording project featuring her flute titled Evolutions,
a compilation of several Austin artists and their original works. When not on stage
or in the studio, the self-described "luckiest flute player on the Blue Planet" can be
found at a pickin' party doing what she loves best -- sharing her music with friends
she loves.
